“Bon Bíni, Hannah.” A warm, traditional Curaçaoan welcome from the staff at Renaissance Curaçao Resort & Casino. Greeted with smiles, I was whisked away to check-in. “Hello, Miss Hannah, we have an ocean view room with a balcony for you.” SAY NO MORE! After I heard this, after a long travel day that began at 3am, I was ready to drop my bags and watch the sunset from the balcony. And that I did. But let’s get to know the rest of the hotel and why I think it is the perfect spot to base yourself to explore all that Curaçao has to offer.
Renaissance Curaçao is located just 5 minutes from the Queen Emma Bridge on the Otrobanda side. The gateway to exploring Willemstad, the foot traffic only bridge connects Otrobanda to Punda (the colorful side filled with markets, restaurants, shopping, color and Dutch-inspired architecture). The staff of the hotel will happily organize any tours or transfers that you might need for spots that are not within walking distance. I can recommend Scooby Tours for this! Read more about my itinerary here.
Chances are if you’re visiting Curaçao you aren’t here to stay on the resort. BUT there is good reason to when staying at the Renaissance! From the name, you already know there is a casino. So, if you’re into that sort of thing put your gambling pants on and be prepared to roll the dice (open 10am-4am). For me, I was more into the private beach. But this isn’t your average beach. I mean, it’s the Renaissance- is anything ever average when staying at a Renaissance property? NOPE!
Infinity Beach is located on the second floor facing the ocean. From the name you can conclude two things: it is actually an infinity pool but it is still a sandy beach! The ocean on this side of the island is quite choppy and is near the cruise ship port so it’s not an ideal setting for a natural beach. But this is as natural as they get when it comes to manmade beaches! For those that prefer a regular (read: boring) pool not to worry, they have that covered!
Start your day with a cabana massage. I recommend booking for 8am when there is no one on the beach yet and your ears are filled with the sounds of the waves crashing below. Then, head to breakfast where the food and coffee is plentiful. You can organize an appointment via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Also on property is a full fitness center with free weights, treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bikes. Might I add, it is right next to Starbucks. And this isn’t a “We Proudly Serve Starbucks” café. It is an actual Starbucks! There is a second one located just outside the property alongside a number of shops and restaurants. Renaissance Curaçao Resort & Casino has a venue space making it perfect for those planning an event. Did someone say wedding in paradise?
Renaissance Mall & Rif Fort
Built in 1828, this once protective fort (also a UNESCO World Heritage site) has been transformed into a waterfront mall. Located right outside the front doors of the property is the Renaissance Mall & Rif Fort. Here you’ll find heaps of shopping, dining and entertainment! Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 there is live entertainment on the Rif Fort stage. Learn more here!
Ocean View Room with Balcony
I’m sorry but you can’t say no to an ocean facing balcony! You can expect to find all of the amenities you’d find across Renaissance properties worldwide here. And yes, turn down service exists and YES they place a delicious little chocolates right on your pillow.
Restaurants on Property
There are two dining options on the property. Inside on the first floor you’ll find Nautilus. Here you have the option of a buffet or a la carte dining from the menu. The buffet was delicious and is so much more than all of your negative buffet assumptions you are currently making. I promise. The food is yummy, warm when necessary, cold when necessary, clean, organized and well maintained, staff surround you should you have any questions AND there is a full pastry section for breakfast and dessert section during dinner with at least 7 new options each morning/night. Indoor or outdoor seating is available and it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Infinity Beach Bar is your second choice. Located on the second floor on the beach, this tropical dining option is the spot for casual fare and beachside beverages. Infinity Beach Bar is completely open air and the ocean is your back drop. Might I suggest you dine amongst the stars?
I knew I loved Curaçao the moment the doorman greeted me with a smile and ‘Bon Bíni’ at the Renaissance Curaçao Resort & Casino. So much of an experience relies on where you rest your head at night and for me that perfect place was the Renaissance. That one smile set the tone for the trip and smiles followed everywhere I went. It’s funny how first impressions are everything. Curaçao, I will be back for you! Be sure to check out my full itinerary here!
