Here’s the thing. I felt like a lost puppy when it came to packing for Asia. Sure, I’ve packed for a cross country trip to Alaska but packing for that is almost a no brainer. Jackets, boots, jeans, sweaters and hats. The necessities. But when you’re leaving the homeland for the very first time to travel to foreign lands, you don’t know what to expect, what to pack or what to pack all of it in. Luggage can make or break (literally) an airport experience. I’ve learned a thing or two from my trip to and throughout Asia and Puerto Rico.
Like I said, prior to my around the world trip with Lesley I had never been out of the country before. I was faced with my first long haul flight EVER.
Disclaimer: I am the poster child for over packing. I think of every possible scenario and pack for it. It gets better (or worse I don’t know anymore). Sure, I’ve got all of my sandals, sneakers, flats, wedges, tanks, tees, shorts, overalls, sweaters, swimsuits, socks, underwear, bras, hats, bags and all of my other accessories among other things that I bet I’m missing here. Oh yeah, that rain jacket that I definitely didn’t wear. So all of that, that’s packed in my 50 lb suitcase. I also have all of my camera gear- my DSLR, GoPro, tripod, lens kit etc. Can’t forget my handy dandy computer! And all of that obviously doesn’t go in a checked bag. This stuff is H.E.A.V.Y and, admittedly, all of this should have been in a separate bag, not my carry-on. But it was, rookie move. Don’t try this at home kids.
As the day was rapidly approaching I remember scrambling trying to figure out a carry-on that would fit my camera gear, laptop, and all of the other 15 hour inflight essentials. On top of that it needed to be durable, lightweight and have all the right pockets and organization I needed. Enter: Lo & Sons, The O.G.
Not only did this bag make my first long haul experience a breeze, it has everything I was looking for. AND SO MUCH MORE.
The O.G. is one-part lightweight, one-part stylish and five-parts functional. These were all things on my list (and should be on yours) of must-haves when searching for a carry-on. I love the design of this bag and the endless color options I had to choose from. I decided on a versatile color, black. The black exterior is accented with leather, gold hardware and lavender (swoon) interior.
There is literally a place for everything. Inside there is a padded laptop compartment that fits a laptop up to 13”. Along with pockets for your tablet or travel journal, cell phone, and a zipper pocket for all the little things that don’t have a home (think: chapstick, rings, earrings, extra socks). There is even a pocket that extends inside to fit an extra pair of shoes so that they have their own compartment and won’t scuff up your belongings inside the bag. And yes, I was able to fit my camera gear, laptop and everything else in the O.G. Bada bing, bada boom.
The exterior of the O.G. is just as functional. There are two main pockets. On one side, you have a pocket that unzips from both the top and bottom. Why? Because the designers over at Lo & Sons are geniuses. When you unzip the top and bottom you can slip the O.G. over the handle of your suitcase. This allows you to navigate freely though the airport without having a heavy bag on your shoulders. I think that’s my favorite feature. On the other side of the bag there’s another pocket with a key clip to keep your keys in place. Because let’s face it there is nothing, I mean NOTHING, worse than getting back after a long flight only to scramble in the lonely long-term airport parking lot because you can’t find your keys.
This is the bag. The O.G. puts every other shoulder bag I’ve owned to shame! It’s completely compartmentalized making organization unavoidable. Say goodbye to the days of fumbling over all of the stuff you have in your carry-on. Scrambling at security to put your laptop in one bin, your bag in one and your shoes in another is nohin’ but a thang with the O.G.
If you’re a frequent traveler, you need this bag. Not a traveler? You still need this bag. When I’m not traveling I use the O.G. every day whether I’m going to the gym or headed to a coffee shop to work.
Now that I’ve covered the bases here is what I packed in my Lo & Sons O.G. for my first (and definitely not my last) long haul flight! What are your long haul must haves?
