January Beach Day

Who says you can’t go to the beach in the winter? It is one of my favorite spots to just relax and think about “life.” I don’t know if it’s the silence, the feeling of the sand separating beneath my boots, or the endless hues of blues, grays, and whites that I find so calming. But I challenge you to go to the beach and reconnect with yourself.  I promise, it doesn’t warrant much thought or effort. Everything seems to just flow in the way the waves roll in.

I’ll share with you this timeless excerpt from John F. Kennedy; “I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it’s because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it’s because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea – whether it is to sail or to watch it – we are going back from whence we came.” If you can’t find anything to reflect on, reflect on those very words.

For my January beach day, I wanted to wear something warm and practical; something that reflected the effortlessness of the ocean. I paired my flannel chambray shirt with a tasseled sweater. For more warmth I wore a faux fur headband, my Bean Boots (in true New England style), and a down jacket. I now understand why women living in the colder countries of the world (I’m talking about you Russia) wear so much (faux) fur- it keeps you really, really warm. When you’re planning a beach day in the winter be sure to bring a blanket and some hot chocolate to keep you nice and cozy.
